Virginia Chamber Tourism Committee Welcomes Governor's $3.6 million Budget Amendment

1.26.2010

The Tourism Committee of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce enthusiastically welcomes Governor McDonnell’s $3.6 million budget amendment to augment the activities of the Virginia Tourism Corporation. We consider job creation and the associated generated revenue critically important to neutralize the current fiscal malaise; thus some strategic re-ordering of the Commonwealth’s budget priorities is in order. The Governor’s action represents an important step in this direction. While we have emphasized “no more cuts’ as our first priority, we applaud the Governor for this bold step and will work in lockstep with him and his team to make it a reality. We embrace wholeheartedly his eventual goal of doubling the VTC budget by 2014.

Tourism marketing has a proven return of $5 in tax revenues for every dollar spent; $2.88 of which returns to state coffers in the same fiscal year. Additionally, the industry generates annually $19.2 billion in visitor spending, $1.28 billion in state and local taxes, $4.3 billion in payroll and salaries and supports 210,620 jobs.

In the midst of significant economic challenges to the people of Virginia, it is imperative that we investigate all reasonable solutions to these challenges and seek new and innovative ways to put Virginian’s back to work and improve the economy. Tourism promotion deserves to be an integral part of Virginia’s plans for economic recovery.
