Virginia Chamber Statement on House Health Care Vote

3.24.2010

March 24, 2010

RICHMOND, VA—Virginia Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Hugh D. Keogh issued the following statement on passage of the health care bill:

“Throughout the national health care debate, the Virginia Chamber of Commerce has consistently and strongly supported meaningful, market-based reforms that will make quality health care more affordable and accessible to both businesses and individuals. Unfortunately, the House passed bill that has now been signed into law will not accomplish that goal. Instead, it will impose new employer mandates, raise taxes and increase the federal deficit, all at a time when our economy is struggling to recover.

Going forward, we will continue to work with our allies at the national level to promote real reforms that curb costs, improve wellness, rein in frivolous lawsuits, and expand consumer choice.

The debate has been long and divisive. It will continue.

"We are grateful to the majority of Virginia's House of Representatives delegation who recognized early and whose votes reflected that the legislation before them last Sunday was not in the best interest of Virginia business and Virginians. "
