VIRGINIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNOUNCES NEW LEADER

RICHMOND, VA - The Virginia Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that the Honorable Barry E. DuVal has been selected as the next President and CEO of the organization. Mr. DuVal succeeds Hugh D. Keogh who has led the organization since 1992. Mr. Keogh will retire on June 30, 2010.

Mr. DuVal brings an impressive array of economic development and business credentials to his new post. Since January 2002, he has served as President and CEO of Kaufman & Canoles Consulting, LLC, an economic development consulting firm specializing in Public Private Partnerships, and strategic planning for business, government agencies and municipalities.

Mr. DuVal, a 1981 graduate of James Madison University, served as the Secretary of Commerce and Trade for the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1998 – 2001 in the administration of Governor James S. Gilmore, III. During his term as Secretary, Virginia set new records of economic development with over 1500 economic development projects representing 156,850 new jobs and $13.7 billion in private investment. His responsibilities included the development of “The Virginia Strategy: Prosperity into the New Century,” an economic development plan used during his tenure as Secretary. Mr. DuVal also negotiated state incentives to secure new business investment in the Commonwealth.

Mr. DuVal has significant experience in local government. From 1990 – 1996, he served as the Mayor of Newport News, Virginia. During his tenure, he launched innovative economic development programs that spurred the expansion of existing business and the attraction of new business from around the globe. In 1996, Mr. DuVal was selected as the founding President and CEO of the Hampton Roads Partnership, a regional organization designed to advance the economic interest of Southeast Virginia’s 1.6 million citizens.

Mr. DuVal understands the regulatory and financial challenges facing business owners. From 1983 – 1996, he served as President and CEO of DuVal Associates, Inc., Realtors, a diversified real estate firm based in Newport News, Virginia.

Mr. Clint Morse, 2010 Chairman of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce said of the DuVal appointment, “We are thrilled that a person of Barry’s stature and achievements in the Commonwealth will be leading the Chamber to continue Virginia’s ranking as the number one state in which to do business and to further expand business development and job growth within our state.”

Retiring President Hugh Keogh said, “Barry is the right person to take the Chamber’s reins as I complete my tenure. His passion, energy and focus on the Virginia business climate will pay great dividends.”

Barry DuVal added, “It is an honor to be selected to serve as the President and CEO of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce. I will work with the Chamber’s members, local chambers and other Virginia leaders to promote a statewide pro-business agenda in order to protect, preserve and grow business and industry within the Commonwealth.”

The Virginia Chamber of Commerce is the state’s most broadly based business organization and leading advocate on behalf of the Virginia business climate. It is based in Richmond, Virginia.
